This therapy is a highly effective, non-surgical solution to disc related lower back or neck pain. Studies have shown a 93% success rate with healing disc injuries. (the exception being if a disc is totally desiccated (dehydrated) and/or it has fused.) This treatment is for patients who are experiencing a "back flair up" or have been told they need back surgery or injections.
There are discs between every vertebrae in in your spine. Each disc is full of water which gives it its height and helps support the weight of your body. As you age, or get injured, the annulus (which holds the water of the disc) can degenerate.
Decompression therapy helps rehydrate the disc or maintain the disc's hydration, to avoid the annulus from becoming injured. When the disc fluid is drained, the disc shrinks and the vertebrae squeeze together, causing nerve pain.
I tell my patients to think about an above-ground swimming pool. The pool itself is like the annulus (annular meaning circular, or coming full circle). If the annulus is strong, the water will be contained in the pool. If any damage occurs in the wall of the pool, the water will leak. Similarly, if the annulus tears, we'd need to repair the hole and fill it back up with water.
